Sooke Celtic tune up for season with a win

McGavin Cup: Sooke Celtic FC advances in thrilling 2-1 victory

Sooke Celtic FC got off on the right foot in preparation for the upcoming season.

The team notched a 2-1 victory in the round of 16 against Division 3 Juan de Fuca All-Flows on Friday, Aug. 16, at Royal Bay Secondary School in the opening round of McGavin Cup play. Keegan Phillips and Ketil Eckhardt scored for Sooke Celtic.

Sooke Celtic will take on Division 2 Castaways on Friday, Aug. 23, at 7 p.m. at Fred Milne Park in the quarter-finals.

"We would sure love lots of fans and chainsaws to welcome the new Sooke Celtic players," said Pete McKay, Celtic assistant coach.

The fans have been known to show their support by revving a chainsaw at home games - an unusual but effective motivator.

The team kicks off the regular season, its second in Vancouver Island Soccer League Division 1 play, on the road Sept. 7 against Powell River Villa. Their first home game for Sooke Celtic is against Gorge FC Friday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. at Fred Milne Park (The Log).

Watch for an in-depth look at the upcoming season in a future issue of the Sooke News Mirror.
