Students from Edward Milne Community School’s track and field team were on their mark and more at the Island Championships.

“It was a huge success for our team,” said EMCS track and field coach Zac Vine said regarding the event that took place May 21 and 22 in Port Alberni.

“Ava Campbell was the talk around the field on day two,” Vine said. “She started the morning by smashing her personal best and winning first place in the Senior Girls shot put, an incredible feat by itself, but even more impressive by a grade 11 student competing against grade 12s.”

Campbell also came first in the Senior Girls Javelin event.

“Two first place finishes at Islands, she is an absolute rock star,” Vine said.

Emma Childs, who entered the Senior Girls 2000-metre steeplechase ranked sixth, finished in third place with a personal best.

Four athletes from EMCS qualified for the provincial track and field championships in five different events. Keanu Kanealii in the Boys 110-Metre hurdles and Harrison Libbenga in the Junior Boys shot put joined Campbell and Childs at the event, which took place June 6 to 8 in Nanaimo.

“The team had an incredible season with a dominant showing at the Island Championships this year,” Vine noted. “Although we didn’t have the success we were hoping for at the Provincial Championships, the team is building on the provincial experience and motivated for next season. With Ava Campbell and Anela Kanealii returning for their Senior years, and freshman superstar Annika French joining the team, next year is going to be very exciting for EMCS track and field.”
