The Victoria Foundation provided 112 grants in 2019 – grants totalling $2,815,287 in all, distributed to 109 charities across the Capital Region and beyond!

When Broadmead Care Society had to replace beds in its two residences – homes that provide care for some of our community’s most vulnerable members – that vital need was met by a community grant from the Victoria Foundation. That grant recognized that Broadmead’s residents deserve to sleep in a bed that ensures their safety and comfort, essential to their health and wellbeing.

And when women impacted by violence and trauma wanted to learn lifelong skills from working women, entrepreneurs and employers through Bridges for Women’s Women Mentoring Women, another Foundation grant meant these mentors could inspire confidence, strength and capacity for sustainable employment.

These are just two of the 112 grants provided by the Victoria Foundation in 2019 – grants totalling $2,815,287 in all, distributed to 109 charities across the Capital Region and beyond!

Just who benefits from those grants? Here’s just a small sampling…

  • 1,000 X 5 Children’s Book Recycling Project Society received $15,000 for its initiative to support young children and learning by providing books for babies and preschoolers in this crucial early brain development and literacy stage.
  • Ballet Victoria Society received 15,322, for a new dance program for people with Parkinson’s Disease.
  • Cetus Research & Conservation Society received $30,000 to mitigate noise impacts on Southern Resident Killer Whales.
  • Sooke Family Resource Society received $15,000 for its Prenatal Education and Outreach Program
  • Society for Kids at Tennis received $16,500 to help provide free tennis lessons to children facing challenges from financial circumstances or developmental disability.

Looking forward to 2020, applications for Victoria Foundation’s next round of Community Grants will open Feb. 3 at noon, and close March 2 at 11:59 p.m. Questions regarding the application process? Call the Foundation 250-381-5532 or email today.

Much more coming in 2020

Of course, there’s much more coming up for the Victoria Foundation in 2020 too!

The Foundation joins the City of Victoria in co-hosting a sustainable development gathering, welcoming guests from around the world and right here at home to the Victoria Conference Centre March 10 and 11.

The Foundation also hopes to build on previous Vital Conversations that tackled topics such as staying connected in our community and youth mental health, by touching on other vital, local issues.

And coming up in the spring is the 15th annual Victoria’s Vital Signs community check-up. Watch for the survey launching in May – your chance to weigh in on vitality of our region – with the results published in the fall.
