The new Canadian Dental Care Plan offers significant benefits for Canadians who have lacked dental coverage until now. However, with this long-awaited support come questions about how it works, who is eligible and what services are covered.
“This plan represents a significant step toward improving dental care access for many Canadians. Understanding the details is crucial to ensure you can make the most of the benefits available,” notes Dr. Beshoy Youssef, from SunRiver Dental and Implant Centre in Sooke.
As the CDCP rolls out, familiarizing yourself with its coverage options and eligibility criteria is vital for navigating this new resource. Dr. Youssef answers the top five questions prospective patients have had about the plan.
Q: What services are covered with the Canadian Dental Care Plan?
A: The CDCP currently covers basic treatments, including:
- Exams
- X-rays
- Cleanings
- Fillings
- Extractions
Starting Nov. 1, 2024, the plan may expand to include major treatments such as crowns, bridges and dentures. Additionally, orthodontic services may be considered for inclusion in 2025. Check online for the latest updates.
Q: Who qualifies for coverage under the Canadian Dental Care Plan?
A: To be eligible, individuals must:
- Be a Canadian resident for tax purposes.
- Have filed last year’s income tax return.
- Have a net family income of less than $90,000.
- Not have access to other dental plans.
- Meet the age requirements set by the plan.
Q: Must prospective clients apply for the plan before making an appointment?
A: While SunRiver Dental can pre-book appointments, Dr. Youssef recommends applying for coverage first to confirm eligibility, as each patient receives a specific start date for their coverage upon approval. Applications can be submitted online at Canada.ca/dental or by calling 1-833-537-4342 (select option 2).
Q: Can the CDCP be combined with other dental insurance?
A: No, the plan cannot be combined with other dental coverages like:
- Employment benefits from you or a family member.
- Coverage from professional or student organizations.
- Pension benefits from federal, provincial or territorial government plans.
- Group plans from insurance or benefits companies.
Exceptions include patients covered under the First Canadian Health Dental Plan (First Nations status) and those qualifying for government disability benefits.
Q: Is there anything else current or future clients need to know about the plan?
A: While the CDCP provides support, it's not comprehensive. Coverage varies based on individual income and is reimbursed at levels of 40, 60 or 100 per cent of the CDCP fee guide. It’s crucial to note that the CDCP has its own fee guide, which may differ from the current B.C. dental fee guide, potentially leaving patients responsible for any fee differences.
Not all dental offices participate in the program, so it’s wise to ask about eligibility when scheduling an appointment. Receiving a notification letter from the government does not automatically qualify someone for the plan; individuals must complete the application process, which may take up to three months.
“As a dentist, I believe the Canadian Dental Care Plan is a fantastic opportunity to improve access to essential dental services for many Canadians.
