An arrest has been made by the Saanich Police Department following a string of break-ins at the University of Victoria.
Since June 2021, a total of 11 break-ins have been reported at various buildings across campus, and of that total, nine were reported to have occurred in the last month and a half.
Items such as generators, tools and electronics were stolen – efforts to locate the property are ongoing, said Const. Markus Anastasiades of the Saanich Police Department in a statement.
On Jan. 12, the suspect triggered an alarm at the UVic bookstore around 4:30 a.m.
Campus security located a man coming out of the store and spoke with him briefly before he fled the scene. Police were unable to locate the suspect after the incident.
However, evidence was obtained and investigators were pointed to a suspect with a history of property-related crimes, the department said.
On Jan. 16, officers located and arrested a 38-year-old man who was later released with conditions and a court date. He faces criminal charges relating to the break and enters.
