Arrest of armed men leads police to dynamite stashed in Sooke Road home

The RCMP’s West Shore Street Crime Unit recovered three sticks of dynamite on Wednesday (April 30) from a Langford home on Sooke Road.

The RCMP’s West Shore Street Crime Unit recovered three sticks of dynamite on Wednesday (April 30) from a Langford home on Sooke Road.

The address has not been released, but RCMP said it was a semi-rural area.

The street crime unit executed a search warrant on the property one week after police arrested three men connected to the home.

When officers searching the house discovered the dynamite, they contacted the RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit in Vancouver. The unit disposed of three dynamite sticks, each measuring 10 inches in length and 1.5 inches in diameter.

The explosives had detonators attached, adding to the threat and unpredictability of the situation.

“It could have killed or caused extensive damage to a building,” said Sgt. Max Fossum, West Shore RCMP. “I am not sure if it could have blown up a house, but it was enough to kill.”

The search warrant stemmed from an investigation by West Shore RCMP and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement unit of B.C.

The three men arrested April 24 were armed with hand guns and has body armour. Police had kept the men under surveillance and watched them coming and going from the Sooke Road Home.

“Public safety is our No. 1 priority. The investigation is ongoing and we are examining the evidence that has been collected,” Fossum said.
