A pickup driver is being blamed by police for causing a crash that backed up traffic early Monday.

No injuries were reported after the driver ran a red light and hit a vehicle before crashing into the underpass where the Island Highway splits in View Royal on June 5, said Cpl. Nancy Saggar of West Shore RCMP.

The intersection leads to the on-ramp for the Trans-Canada Highway and in the other direction toward View Royal and Esquimalt.

Both lanes were closed and traffic was diverted from about 6 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.

While both vehicles sustained major front-end damage, no major injuries were reported.

No drugs or alcohol are suspected and the driver was ticketed for driving without due care and attention, Saggar said.
