Despite quick police response, suspect eludes capture in Saanich bank robbery attempt

Man showed a note demanding money to teller in Shelbourne Street bank

Police are seeking witnesses to help identify the suspect in an attempted bank robbery in Saanich on Wednesday (Feb. 9).

A man entered a bank in the 3600-block of Shelbourne Street at about 5 p.m. and presented a note demanding money. Saanich police officers arrived while the attempted heist was in progress, but the suspect left through the bank’s front doors and was last seen walking westbound on Pear Street.

Police were not able to locate the suspect, despite their quick response, according to a release. No information was available on whether anything was taken from the bank.

The suspect is described as about age 30, Caucasian, standing 5’5” with a medium build. He was wearing all black clothing and a black face mask at the time of the incident.

Officers are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or captured the suspect on their vehicle’s dash camera to contact Saanich police at 250-475-4321.
