This German shepherd was found in an overturned dog crate in a creek off Klahanie Drive in Langford last week. The SPCA is seeking the identity of the owners and information on how the dog was abandoned.

Dog found abandoned in crate in Langford

A German shepherd was found trapped in a dog crate partially submerged in a creek in the Happy Valley area of Langford last week, says the SPCA.

A couple walking their dog on Klahanie Drive near Willing Drive found and rescued the anxious dog morning of March 5, and drove it to the Victoria SPCA.

The creek was a few metres off the road, less than half a metre wide and about 10 centimetres deep. BC SPCA special constable Lynsay Bailey said water was pouring into the crate, which was resting on its side, although not enough to drown the female shepherd, estimated as a two-year-old young adult.

The dog didn’t have hypothermia and was in the creek for less than 24 hours, Bailey estimated. Although from the smell and condition of the 1.5 metre high, 1.5 m long crate, the dog had been confined for some time.

It remains unclear if the dog landed in its predicament by mistake or due to an act of cruelty.

“It doesn’t make sense either way. If people are missing a dog they usually call. If they don’t want a dog anymore they can give it away or adopt it out,” Bailey said. “To go to the extent of putting a crate in the creek is bizarre and doesn’t make sense.

“Some people think she could have fallen off a truck, but there’s not been a single phone call to us or the pound,” she added. “The area where she was found is very nice, with upscale homes. We are hoping someone has seen the dog and knows who she belongs to.”

SPCA staff have named the “very cute” German shepherd Amy, Bailey said, and she will soon be up for adoption. Bailey described Amy as a working dog that will need a family that can keep her active.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call Bailey at the Victoria SPCA Branch at 250-388-7722, ext. 206.
