A driver was ticketed for failing to stop at a red light after a crash at Foul Bay and Lansdowne roads on Jan. 16. Police and fire were called for the crash that saw one vehicle’s airbags deploy. The BC Ambulance Service attended and both drivers were cleared medically. There were no passengers. A 73-year-old woman was issued a $167 ticket.
Power cut
A resident reported an EV charging cable stolen Jan. 10. The cable was plugged into their electric vehicle when it was stolen from the 2000-block of Cavendish Avenue. There are no suspects and no surveillance footage available.
Renter scammed
An online scam cost someone seeking a place to live $1,950. The fraud was reported to Oak Bay police Jan. 15, after the victim paid to secure a rental property. Unfortunately, the ad was fraudulent.
Anyone who believes they have been targeted by a scammer can report it directly to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca or by phone at 1-888-495-8501, and those who’ve lost money in a fraud should call the local police to report it.

Strangers on site
On Jan. 10 a resident reported an unknown youth had come into their unlocked home through the front door. When police arrived in the 2000-block of Midland Road an item that had been stolen was found in the front yard.
A utility trailer on a construction site was rifled through and reported Jan. 10. The bar locking mechanism was broken on the trailer in the 1900-block of Crescent Road. Nothing was reported stolen.
Excessive speed
Oak Bay police issued a $368 ticket for excessive speed and impounded a driver’s vehicle for seven days in a 3 a.m. stop.
The officer stopped the car Jan. 16 in the 2700-block of Foul Bay Road.
The Motor Vehicle Act defines excessive speeding as more than than 40 km/h over the speed limit. That comes with a $368 fine and three penalty points on a driver’s record. Those ticketed for driving 60 km/h beyond the posted speed are fined $483 and given three penalty points.
Unusual cane
Anyone looking for their lost distinctive wood cane can check in with Oak Bay Police Department. Someone turned in a cane found on Willows Beach the morning of Jan. 16. Anyone with information on its owner can call OBPD at 250-592-2424.
