UPDATED: Four displaced after Monday afternoon fire in View Royal

Fire started in the basement suite of a home on Gair Road

Four residents have been displaced after a house fire in View Royal Monday afternoon.

Crews from the View Royal and Colwood fire departments were called to the fire which started in a basement suite at 188 Gair Rd., near Helmcken Road just before 2 p.m.

When crews arrived on scene, they managed to contain the fire quickly, which prevented it from spreading to the rest of the house. Firefighters also rescued a cat from the main floor.

At the time of the fire, there was one person in the basement suite and another who was asleep upstairs. Smoke detectors alerted both residents who got out before crews arrived. There were no injuries.

Hurst said the suite was completely destroyed and there was extensive smoke and heat damage to the upper part of the home.

He estimated there was roughly $150,000 to $200,000 worth of damage. The cause of the fire is undetermined.

Several neighbours were seen outside the home comforting a young woman and a dog after the fire had been extinguished.
