Sooke elementary school's suspected electrical fire contained

Firefighters from Sooke, Otter Point and Metchosin responded to a fire at one of Sooke’s oldest school at around 6 p.m., Oct. 29. The fire, according to one source, was electrical in nature and was spotted a maintenance worker who came on shift early and spotted smoke coming our from under the eaves. A driver passing by also alerted the fire department to the smoke.

The fire was contained around 7 p.m. and precautions were being taken for any further smoke. Traffic on Sooke Road was slowed down but was going through.

Sooke Elementary dates back to 1891 when the first school in Springside area became too small and Mr. William Bell Charters donated land for a new school. Since then the school has had new buildings, been rebuilt, then added to and more recently renovated. It has a rich history and a claim to fame of being the oldest school in B.C situated on the original site.

Currently they have 241 children registered in Kindergarten to Grade Five.
