A man faces charges after someone smashed a front door and pulled a fire alarm in the 2000-block of Oak Bay Avenue.

Police were called Jan. 20 after someone used a metal garbage can lid to smash the front door of an apartment building, then pulled a fourth-floor alarm. The incident was captured on video, according to an Oak Bay Police Department news release.

Officers located a suspect a few blocks away and arrested the man for break and enter and mischief. He was released on an undertaking to attend court.

Door damage

A homeowner realized his front door was damaged and reported it to police on Jan. 17.

The resident in the 900-block of Foul Bay Road said around 2 a.m. he heard a bang and thought it might be one of his kids. He later realized the front door of his home was damaged either by someone shouldering the door or using a pry tool. Neighbourhood enquiries and surveillance footage left officers no leads.

Designer shades, Lego lifted

Sticker shock

An expired insurance sticker turned out to be true Jan. 20. An officer stopped a driver in the 2400-block of Cadboro Bay Road after police records confirmed the vehicle was not insured. The vehicle was towed and the driver issued a $598 ticket.

Number disconnected

A popup proved only half fruitful for a scammer targeting an Oak Bay resident. Police were called Jan. 20 after a resident provided several hundred dollars worth of gift cards after a popup appeared on his computer screen.

The resident called the number in the popup and the fraudster demanded more money for a warranty to protect the computer. That’s when the resident realized he was being scammed and called police.

The homeowner gave the phone number to police, who called and informed that an investigation was started and to cease contacting the resident. A few moments later the number was disconnected.

Traffic stops

A pair of drivers are off the road after roadside screenings for impairment on the weekend. Friday, Jan. 21, an officer in the 3400-block of Cadboro Bay Road pulled over a driver for speeding. The officer detected alcohol on the driver’s breath, police said. A roadside screening showed a ‘warn’ and the woman was issued a three-day driving prohibition and tickets for speeding as well as not producing a driver’s licence.

Sunday, Jan. 23, an officer stopped a vehicle after noting erratic driving in the 2400-block of Foul Bay Road. The officer saw signs of alcohol impairment and after failing a roadside screening, the man was issued a 90-driving prohibition and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
