Work is scheduled to begin this summer to replace the Upper Harris Bridge between Lake Cowichan and Port Renfrew, improving the safety and reliability of this Harris River crossing. The bridge is located about 30 km southeast of Lake Cowichan along the Pacific Marine Circle Route. A new two-lane structure will replace the old single-lane bridge.
The Pacific Marine Circle Route is a key transportation corridor for the Port Renfrew area and promotes tourism along the entire route from Victoria to Port Renfrew, Lake Cowichan, Duncan, and back to Victoria.
“The Upper Harris Bridge is located on a busy and popular stretch of highway in the Port Renfrew area, and the new structure will make travelling this route safer and more enjoyable for residents and tourists alike,” said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Blair Lekstrom.
A $1.2-million contract has been awarded to Don Mann Excavating Ltd. of Victoria. Work is scheduled to begin in late June and finish by the end of September. The new bridge will enhance the marine environment in this portion of the Harris River by restoring the natural stream channel to improve the stream flow, fish passage and fish habitat.
BC Parks is getting an extra $3 million for this year’s capital budget, a 27 per cent increase over last year. Overall, $13.98 million is funding projects directed at attracting young families, offering new recreation opportunities, improving accessibility and increasing attendance.
Juan de Fuca Provincial Park will receive a $200,000 allocation for upgrading several sections of the trail. Located on the southernmost tip of Vancouver Island, the park (Juan de Fuca Marine Trail) is known for its remarkable hiking trails.
