Late child support payments could void your driver’s license

ICBC now has the power to strip the licence of anyone owing child and spousal support payments

Anyone behind on child or spousal support payments can now have their driver’s license removed.

Starting March 1, the Family Maintenance Enforcement Program (FMEP) granted ICBC the ability to cancel or refuse to renew the driver’s license of someone with more than $3,000 in owed support payments.

Previously ICBC was only allowed to refuse the renewal of a driver’s license, which had little effect since licenses are only renewed every five years.

“Changes will also help paying parents reach repayment arrangements sooner and will increase opportunities to create a manageable payment plan by preventing arrears from accumulating for up to five years,” the FMEP said in a statement.

There are 70,000 parents currently enrolled in the FMEP, with an overall payment rate of 92 per cent.
