Sooke RCMP reported on January 17 that an area resident had gone missing and was believed to have possibly drowned in the China Beach area 35 kilometres west of Sooke.

Staff Sergeant Wright said the man in his 40s had been missing since Saturday and that search and rescue personnel had combed the area for signs of him since 4:30 a.m. Monday. Coast guard helicopters had reportedly been part of the search along with boats.

The man’s vehicle and dog were apparently left in the nearby parking lot.

The Staff Sergeant said the bushes in the area had been thoroughly searched to no avail, and would not speculate further on what may have occurred.

The search was to continue.
