“The main thing that sort of pushed me was that I really think the community needs to be able to have a discussion and if nobody runs against Mike then there’s not even an opportunity to ask him questions. I stepped into the whole Juan de Fuca Electoral Area discussions because the message that I heard coming out of Mike Hicks in particular, and others also, was that outsiders were the ones controlling the discussion in our community. And I know that local people were speaking up, but they weren’t being appreciated for that effort.
“Now I had an individual opinion, and my opinion was that I was against the proposal, but the whole of the community needed to know that it was good for them to take part in the discussion and I think that’s being lost right now. And I don’t think that the basic community is being heard, I think that there’s a appropriate community development, there’s things that would enhance all of our areas and that the community should be the ones that decide that, not the people that have particular interests in one direction or another.
So I thought, well, I don’t know anything about politics. But I didn’t see anybody else stepping up, and I couldn’t think of anybody I could nominate.” Terrance Martin
Candidate for Sooke council Terrance Martin has announced his nomination for trustee in Milne zone, Sooke School District 62. Martin has also thrown his hat into the local municipal council
“With eight natural children and a host of international students and foster kids, I’m partly to blame for the surge in demand, so I feel I should step up and shoulder some responsibility,” he quipped.
“As a parent of a special needs child I have a particular appreciation for what schools can and cannot do, and for the role of outside agencies. I think the school district can benefit greatly by tighter communication with council, and a dual role as councillor and school trustee is the most effective position I can think of for my professional skill set and experience.
With nearly 30 years in business, a facilities project management background, and a Masters degree in communication and culture, I think I have a lot to offer. Education is a vital component of building healthy sustainable communities, and a healthy community is a determinative element in successful student outcomes.”
