There has been a dramatic increase in thefts from vehicles in the Sooke region and police are warning the public.

RCMP are investigating 10 thefts from vehicles over the past month.

On Jan. 6, thieves smashed glass windows of three vehicles in French, Sombrio and China Beach parking lots.

In Sooke, most thefts have occurred in residential areas overnight. A large number of the vehicles targeted were unlocked at the time, said Sooke RCMP Staff Sgt. Jeff McArthur.

Police say items stolen include laptops, sunglasses, CDs, money, cellphones, among others.

McArthur expects other thefts to cars in Sooke, but weren’t reported.
