Sooke residents got their say on the community’s new public library Tuesday night, when the Vancouver Island Regional Library held its first public consultation on the building’s design at Sooke Community Hall.

The library board got the go-ahead for the library in 2015 when the Capital Regional District underwrote a $6-million loan for the library, which will be located on Wadams Way, between Anna Marie and Townsend roads.

“We’re really excited about this project,” said architect Danielle Pepin, who’s designed several libraries.

“Our approach to design is to try to make the space as warm and inviting as possible, using natural light as much as possible.”

Library officials did not provide any drawings or specs on the library, and instead were seeking public input.

The meeting included presentations from VIRL staff, the architect and provided opportunities for the public to contribute their ideas and have their questions answered.

Of the 40 or so members of the public that attended the meeting, there was an array of discussion and suggestions on everything from using solar panels, improving IT infrastructure, the need for public art space, media lounge, public spaces, community garden, programming, outdoor spaces, parking, even a small cafe or coffee bar.

“We will do as much as we can within budget,” said Rosemary Bonanno, VIRL’s executive director

“We’re all open to whatever. This is such a huge new library for Sooke.”

VIRL’s goal is to build a 10,000-square-foot library, within budget. (The current library is just over 3,600 sq. ft.). The $6-million budget includes construction, furnishings, equipment and IT infrastructure. VIRL will also look at expanding hours, more programming and staffing when the new facility opens.

The public was encouraged to fill out a survey at Tuesday’s meeting. You can also go online for more information and project updates.

VIRL plans to have a second public consultation in Sooke, with drawings and other specs, in about six weeks.

Library construction starts in 2018, with a completion date of January 2019.
