The District of Sooke has hired a veteran municipal administrator to fill the position of chief executive officer.
Mayor Maja Tait announced Monday that Norm McInnis was hired to fill the post vacated in February 2018 by Teresa Sullivan. The position has been filled on an interim basis by Don Schaffer.
McInnis is an accomplished senior municipal leader with a proven track record, Tait said in a news release.
“Norm’s experience, communication skills and commitment to service excellence was fully demonstrated in his role as CAO with the District of Fernie. He will be a great addition to Sooke as his background aligns with the strategic direction of council and the vision we share for our community,” Tait said.
Since 2002, McInnis has served as CAO at the Town of Picture Butte, the Town of Westlock and the Town of Olds, all in Alberta, before going to Fernie in November 2016.
In an interview with the Fernie Free Press, the mayor of Fernie lauded McInnis’ work in the community.
“His impact on our organization has been profound and there is no doubt that Norm has left the City of Fernie in a measurably better place, for that we are thankful,” said Fernie Mayor Ange Qualizza.
Not including Schaffer’s interim position, McInnis will be the seventh CAO for the District of Sooke since it’s incorporation 19½ years ago.
McInnis will start his new job here on July 2. He will earn $165,000 per year.
