Two Sooke RCMP officers are being recognized for their efforts to combat drunk driving.

Constables Jason From and Lee Ingeberg were named to Team Alexa and will receive special recognition from B.C.’s lieutenant-governor later this year.

Both Ingeberg and From have all taken at least 12 impaired drivers off the road in the past year through a criminal code investigation or an administrative 90-day immediate roadside prohibition.

Alexa’s Team is named after four-year-old Alexa Middelaer, who was killed by a drunk driver in May 2008. The driver, a 56-year-old woman, was later convicted of drunk driving.

Since the program started, more than 71,300 impaired drivers have been taken off the road.

Sooke Mounties have targeted drunk drivers over the last few months, and since the beginning of the year have processed more than 18, said Staff Sgt. Jeff McArthur.

“Sometimes we come across drug use with impaired drivers, but it’s almost always in combination with alcohol,” McArthur said.
