The Sooke News Mirror has been recognized for excellence in community journalism.

Journalist Dawn Gibson and videographer Arnold Lim won first place for best multi-media feature in the open category class for the 2019 Canadian Community Newspaper Awards.

The duo’s entry was titled “Letter to my former self,” and was the final piece of a multi-story series Gibson wrote on becoming a competitive amateur boxer.

The series culminated with Gibson winning her first – and only – fight at the West Coast Wonder Women card in 2018, sponsored by the Sooke Boxing Club.

This was the second major award Gibson and Lim won for the series.

Earlier this year, they won top prize at the B.C.-Yukon Community NewsMedia Association Ma Murray Community Newspaper Awards.

The Canadian Community Newspaper Awards celebrate the best in community publishing across Canada.
