VIDEO: Martindale Road in Parksville flooded

Englishman River swelling with water

Martindale Road in Parksville is flooded just off of Highway 19 A near Parry’s RV Park today (Jan. 3).

The Englishman River is swelling with water as heavy rains have fallen over the past two days.

Other reports of flooding have been made for Price Road near Errington Road, and pooling of water at the 5100 block of Highway 19A in the Dashwood area.

“Right now there’s a lot of localized flooding, some ditches and culverts are backing up,” said Dashwood Volunteer Fire Department chief Nick Acciavetti, “We’ve had an incident down in the 5100 block of the Island Highway where about three or four inches of water was going across the road. We contacted Mainroad and they were on it pretty quick and what we’ve heard it’s cleared up.”

Arrowsmith Search and Rescue president Nick Rivers said members are observing trouble spots in the area, but that no one is in need of rescuing yet.

“Martindale is flooded, but not enough yet to have a need for any evacuations,” he said. “We’re just doing our rounds and making sure everyone is safe.”

Rivers said SAR members are ready to respond to flooding at a moment’s notice.

He said two main areas of concern are Martindale and the Little Qualicum River, as residents are located near to the banks of the rivers in those areas.

He also said SAR members are keeping a watch out for people gathered to take a look at flooding and surging rivers. He asked that people take a moment to consider if they are safe where they are watching from, as riverbanks can get washed away, or large debris pushed up suddenly on to them.
