WATCH: UVic students walk Ring Road in ‘Day of Action’

Students stage hour-long walkout to protest treatment of Indigenous people

Dozens of students at the University of Victoria staged ‘The Justice or Just Us?’ Day of Action walkout around on Ring Road Wednesday morning.

UVic’s Indigenous Law Students’ Association staged the walkout and protest march to demand equal justice for First Nations people standing before a court of law.

According to the Facebook event, “Indigenous peoples across Turtle Island are reeling from the recent acquittals of Gerald Stanley and Raymond Cormier. The settler “justice” system leaves “just us” behind – to bury our children in vain, to bear the burden of institutional discrimination, and to count our missing and murdered women and girls.”

They were joined by activists and First Nation elders who held a ceremony out front of the Faculty of Law building before campus security closed traffic on ring road for the peaceful protest.

About 100 people took part.
