A highly-anticipated indoor sports complex is on the verge of opening on the West Shore.
West Shore Parks and Recreation plans to open its sports court and turf field to the public with a grand opening on Jan. 31 at 10 a.m.
Currently, crews are putting the final touches on the turf and curtains for the sports court as there were unexpected delays attributed to the contractor and supplier. Geoff Welham, manager of recreation, confirmed that they are on track to hit the budget of $300,000 for the renovations to the space that previously housed a curling rink.
In March, West Shore Parks and Recreation announced its decision to close the curling rink that had been in use since 1975.

Since the closure of the curling rink, Stephanie Cambrey, president of the now-defunct Juan de Fuca Curling Club, said most members dispersed to Victoria and Esquimalt, while others aren’t curling anymore.
Jonathan Huggett, a project consultant for West Shore Parks and Recreation previously said in a comment to Black Press Media that dry floor space would be a better value for taxpayer money.
By the end of January, the renovated complex will have user groups booked for baseball, softball, and soccer on the indoor turf.
In addition, the sports floor space will include pickleball, floor hockey, Jazzercise, wheelchair sports, after school care, Aikido and Boccia.
