View Royal Fire Rescue put out a vehicle fire on the northbound side of the Trans-Canada Highway near the Helmcken and Colwood exits just after 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
Capt. Troy Mollin said they got a call about smoke coming from a car on the highway just after 2 p.m. By the time crews arrived on the scene, the engine was on fire.
Mollin said the driver was outside the car by the time the flame started and was the only person in the vehicle. He added their investigation found the fire occurred due to a mechanical or electrical issue in the engine.
The northbound side of Highway 1 was closed for around 45 minutes while fire crews doused the fire and a tow truck removed the car, with West Shore RCMP redirecting traffic to the Colwood exit.
“It was a pretty textbook call, we thank the public for their patience with the traffic because I know it was a terrible Sunday commute,” said Mollin.
