In Loving Memory ~
On November 11, 2024, our beloved husband and father peacefully took his last flight.
Born on his parents' farm in Belbutte, Saskatchewan, Dave was the eldest of five children.
Predeceased by his parents, Allen and Isabel, and brothers Don (Margie) and Warren. He leaves behind Pat, his wife of 62 years, his children Stephen (Kristi) and Shannon, his sisters Edith (Victor) and Janet, sisters-in-law Cathy and Carolyn, and many other relatives.
Dave had a 36 year career with the Ministry of Highways - South Island District. He made many good friends during those years.
Dave's main love was flying. He got his student pilot's permit at 16 yrs of age, then his private and commercial licenses a few years later. He also held his glider pilot's license and instructed for the Victoria Soaring Club. Dave owned several planes, and very much enjoyed flying family and friends to beautiful places all over the West Coast of BC.
In 1994, Dave and his cousin Jim Boon opened Eagle Airways - a float plane charter service and training operation at Shawnigan Lake, BC. Dave gave up his license at the age of 72.
Another love was music - Dave played piano and organ for 32 years at Wilkinson Rd United Church.
Dave and Pat loved to travel and after retirement they made many road trips across Canada, and took several European river cruises. Dave also enjoyed numerous trips with the whole family to sunny destinations, and cruising to Alaska. His last trip was to Prince George in May 2024 where he was so proud to see his daughter-in-law Kristi graduate University.
Dave spent many years volunteering in the Sooke community with the Contact Society where he drove community members to medical appointments and the VIHA adult day program. He cleaned medical equipment for the Sooke Loan Cupboard, and he served on several local boards.
Dave has been described as gentle and strong, sure and measured. His quiet presence would fill a room. He leaves us with a lifetime full of memories unique to each of us. We loved him dearly, and he will be deeply missed.
The family will plan a celebration of Dave's life in the Spring.
We would like to thank the kindness and support of the medical staff at Victoria General Hospital, and the private caregivers from Community Plus Home Health Care. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Dave's honour to the Sooke Loan Cupboard or Parkinson's Canada.
