August 13, 1933 - January 10, 2023
In loving memory ~
Born the sixth and youngest child to Thomas & Lydia Cross of Cross Point, pioneers of Shirley, B.C. Jane attended a small one-room schoolhouse with her elder brothers, sisters, and cousins. She married the love of her life, Les McTaggart at age seventeen, after meeting him at a community dance held at Shirley Hall. They set up their first home at Sheringham Point on Jane's dowry land which included a small house. Here, their family grew to include three daughters.
They moved to Otter Point after Jane was hospitalized with an aneurysm in 1957. Her family was fractured into three, with their girls being fostered by Les' eldest sister, Les remaining at home as the sole breadwinner, and Jane staying in the hospital for long months of rehabilitation.
In 1970, Jane became pregnant with a fourth child. While doctors were concerned for Jane's health, they joyously welcomed their son in January of 1971. Having become new parents again they decided to foster other children and during their fostering years they had a positive impact on more than fifteen young lives, some of whom stayed in touch with Les and Jane into adulthood.
In the summer of 1977, while on vacation, they fell in love with a large acreage on Ten Mile Lake in Quesnel, B.C. They moved. The farm had livestock and was a great place to explore for their young son, as well as grand and foster children. Many humorous stories are told at family gatherings of romping in the hayloft, playing hide 'n seek, and helping Nana or Papa collect, wash, and candle eggs for sale. All these stories are fondly remembered.
When Les passed away in 2005, Jane sold the farm and moved to a small bungalow in North Quesnel. Her days were spent going for a daily walkabout assisted by "Bob", her trusty walker.
She became a regular downtown sight walking to and from Safeway, the library, or the park; she also volunteered some of her time with the GR Baker Ladies Auxiliary.
Her greatest joy was being the central location for many family birthdays, potluck dinners, or just a quick coffee stop for her family who all meant so much to her. Unfortunately, Jane's earlier head trauma became debilitating and after having home support for two years, it was evident that she could no longer walk unaided. In 2017 she sold her cozy little home & moved into Dunrovin Park Lodge. Once there she quickly became a staff favourite with her sunny disposition; always positive, kind, & grateful for their care.
Jane leaves to grieve her daughters, Janet McCrea (Peter, deceased), Penny Hillard (Les), Lesley Poh (Walter), and her son, Kelly McTaggart (Tara). Her grandchildren Will, Shane, Elissa, Karin, Roxanne, Echo, Eaden, Grace, Cameron, & Gavin. G grands Keisha, Dylan, Lydia, Hailey, Joshua, Kathryn, Thomas, Emilee, Denton, Rachel, Shaina, Gavin, Zakaiah, & Tobias, and GG grands Ethan (deceased), Dominic, Joseph, Kamila, Scarlette, Owen, & Theodore.
The McTaggart family would like to thank all the caring staff at Dunrovin Park lodge for the care of our Nana.
