It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Kenneth Alan Rittaler. Ken passed away July 17, 2021. He died peacefully at Victoria General Hospital, with his three sisters by his side.
Ken was born in Vancouver, moved to Victoria in his teen years. Ken graduated from Victoria High School. Ken's Mom and Dad bought what was called back in the day, the Kings Hotel on Yates Street. That was Ken's first job, working at the registration desk. After that he moved with his family to Sooke.
Ken worked with a drilling company, then at the Sooke Mill for years, and made many friends there. Then Ken was off to the Sooke River Hotel. Owned by his Mom and Dad, Bill and Emma Rittaler. After their passing, Ken was co-owner of the hotel.
Kenny retired from the hotel. He loved his plants, hanging baskets and garden. He also loved watching T.V. If there was any sports on, he didn't miss one of them... LOL
For decades Kenny was instrumental in supporting many local charities and sporting organizations. Too many to mention.
Kenny was known as Mr. Christmas, no one could decorate like Kenny. He played Santa Claus for many years and donated many toys for the children. He loved his meat draws with Rod Sluggett helping out, every Friday night. Ken will be remembered for his kindness, compassion, huge smile and big heart.
Ken was a good local shopper, very supportive of all Sooke businesses.
He was very proud of the award he received, The Chamber of Commerce Social Responsibility Award in 2010.
Ken leaves behind his three sisters, Sandy Knight, Cathy (John) Brohman, Dorothy (Danny) Lyle. Many nieces and nephews, great and great great nieces and nephews. Also good friend Heather Nuttall and good friend Bob.
Ken was predeceased by his Father Bill Rittaler, Mother Emma Rittaler, Brother Jim Rittaler, Brother Don Rittaler and Sister Jean Ross.
Memorial donations in memory of Ken may be made to the Diabetes Association.
