Passed away in his sleep November 11, 2010 After a short acute illness which became complicated with previous health issues. He was predeceased by both parents, Everett (Bud) Strom, and Margaret (nee McPherson) Strom. He is survived by his son William Everett (Ewen) Smith-Strom, Ewen’s mother and Good friend Heather Smith, his brother Randy, nephew Ryan, Sister Wendy and her partner Rod MacMillan, along with many aunts, uncles and cousins. Roly was born in Victoria, B.C. March 1, 1958, and was a longtime resident of Sooke, B.C. Roly’s connection with Sooke was life long, travelling with the family on weekends to his grandparents farm on Poirer Road, Summers were spent at the Lake and helping around the farm. He loved his animals, always a couple of faithful dogs and usually a few cows kept him close to home when he wasn’t working. Roly was independent, a hard worker and devoted dad. A faller for most of his working life, he loved his work and the outdoors. He spent many years in camps up and down the coast. His desire to be close to his young son, Ewen, and some health issues changed his focus away from working in the bush. He began a new chapter, built a home, and not long after started driving gravel truck for Sooke Backhoe. He loved his new life and had many good laughs with his coworkers. Roly took great pride in doing a good job and in being a valuable employee. He had many friends, and a great sense of humour. He will be missed. A memorial service will be held for friends and family, at the Sooke Legion on November 28, 2010 from 1-4pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Lung Association.
