January 1, 1940 - December 8, 2019
On December 8, Shigeko Jensen passed away peacefully at the Royal Jubilee Hospital with her loving family at her side. She is survived by her husband Helge, her son Nicholas, her daughter Maja and her grandson Ewan. As well, she leaves behind her sisters Etsuko (Calgary) and Hideko, and brother Yuzo (Japan) and their families.
Shigeko was born to parents Shigeo and Fusako Arikawa in Kobe, Japan. She immigrated to Calgary, Alberta in 1969 where she met and married Helge in 1970. Together they raised their children in the hamlet of Bragg Creek, Alberta. Shigeko worked as a hairstylist and then for many years as a tour guide in the Canadian Rockies.
Shigeko and Helge moved to Sooke in 2004 and here she greatly enjoyed gardening, forming many new friendships, attending church, taking piano and Tai Chi lessons, exploring the region, and cooking and baking. Shigeko also enjoyed and was very skilled at various crafts, especially knitting, photography and floral arrangement. She had great joy spending time with her grandson Ewan. She loved Christmas and to see the family gather together, sharing a meal and opening gifts. Shigeko lived with many health complications; however, her strong spirit and love of life are a comfort and inspiration to her family.
A sincere thank you to Dr. Vally and the many health providers that assisted her, including Dr. Bryant.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 19th at the Sooke Baptist Church at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Sooke JDF Health Foundation.
