Shirley Sutherland of Sooke BC passed peacefully at the Sunrise Care Home in Victoria after a brief illness. She was 95. Shirley was born and raised in Vancouver. After graduating from UBC with her Bachelor of Home Economics Shirley joined the Navy as a dietitian where she reached the rank of Lieutenant.
In 1959 Shirley married Gordon Sutherland. In 1960 Shirley and her husband bought their property in Sooke overlooking the Sooke Basin. Shirley continued to live at "Ardvreck" after Gords passing in 1966 and was able to reside there until November 2019.
Shirley was a devoted community volunteer in Sooke for over 20 years. This included the Sooke Food Bank, Sooke Meals on Wheels, Sooke Crisis center, Christmas Bureau, Sooke Festival Society, and the Victoria General Hospital Womens' Auxiliary. Shirley enjoyed being a member of the Red Hat Sooke Sirens club and was an active member of the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Sooke.
Shirley loved to travel and explore seeing many different parts of the world. Shirley is probably best known for her love of her dogs. Shirley was a beautiful soul and will be missed by her family and friends.
There will be no service at her request. Donations in her memory can be made to the charity of one's choice. A special thank you goes to the amazing staff at the Sunrise Care Home, where she was part of their family for over two years. Also a special thank you goes to Carol who helped support her and us towards the end.
