CRD land ideal for alternate route

Reader says old pipeline route best option

For some time an alternate route to Sooke has been discussed. Accidents, fires, and weather damage has closed the road in and out of Sooke numerous times.

I received a letter from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure notifying us that Highway 14 ( Sooke Road ) from Connie Road to Glinz Lake Road was eyed for improvements.

However, this is hardly an alternate route. Four lane highways with concrete barriers are closed by accidents often.

There is an obsolete water pipeline running from Humpback Road area to the Stickleback Restaurant.

This pipeline hasn’t been used for years to transport water, however, this property is controlled by the Capital Regional District. This swath of land runs adjacent to the current highway, and I wonder if this could be developed as an alternate route to Sooke.

It may make economic sense to develop this route as a new corridor, rather than putting millions into the existing highway.
