LETTER: Not all dogs need to be leashed on beach

In regards to dogs being required to be leashed at Willows Beach, I propose that the word “leashed” be changed to “under control.” This allows the majority of our pets to enjoy the freedom to play, to explore, to chase a ball or stick supervised by their owners who likewise enjoy meeting friends and walking the beach.

Leashing should be a personal responsibility, used if the dog is aggressive, quarrelsome or too young to run uncontrolled. The safety of seabirds is the main reason for this ruling and it is commonsense to be watchful whether walking the beach, throwing sticks, skipping pebbles, kayaking or paddleboarding. But please, let us have no more restrictions.
