In follow up to the article “What kind of space is needed for centre?” I’d like to add that council is interested in community input so we can work out the cost and financing details for a seniors/youth/community centre in Sooke.
There is a great opportunity to partner with the Vancouver Island Regional Library in their commitment to create a new library in Sooke and share building costs.
A referendum question to borrow funds over 10 years can be included on the municipal election ballot in November. A referendum on this kind of financing is mandatory. Including it this year is a convenient way to get the public’s permission when there is an election to give the next council a mandate to proceed.
Council has put aside $50,000 and budgeted $50,000 per year over the next five years to partially fund a community building. We are looking forward to hearing the report back from the Community Health Initiative (CHI) who is engaging the community and seeking input on council’s behalf.
What are the public’s thoughts on: How much space is needed? Where should it be located? Should we build something new or adapt an existing building? How should it be run? Who wants to be partners? I encourage participation from seniors, youth, service and arts groups, and anyone else who is interested in the CHI forum this coming Saturday at EMCS where you can share your ideas.
