Salmon fishing in Sooke appears to be much better already than last year for size and frequency of spring salmon coming through the area.
Many boats trolling for salmon over the last two weeks have been reporting releasing large wild chinook salmon which are too large to keep under the current saltwater fishing regulations. This is a good sign for the early Fraser River salmon runs now passing through our area headed for spawning grounds high up the Fraser river system.
Halibut fishing has been slower this year in general, and this last week has had a lot of wind, keeping the halibut reports down.
Crabbing continues to be a little slower in the Sooke harbour, but there are still some large male Dungeness crabs to be found.
