Local runners PB at Hatley 8K race

Fifteen Sooke runners competed in the Hatley Castle 8K road race on Sunday

Fifteen Sooke runners competed in the Hatley Castle 8K road race on Sunday, with several racers producing best times or winning their age division.

Local age division winners included Victoria Van Ek (W50-54), Jennifer Smith (W40-44) and Robert Butterworth (M75-79). Three runners took second place in their age division: Robyn Van Ek (W20-24), Marlene Cassells (F1-15) and Bruce Hawkes (M75-79).

Victoria’s Nick Walker won the overall race, with the women’s race dominated by Gina Slaby of Seabeck, Wash. There were 369 finishers.

The Hatley Castle 8K was the third race in the Vancouver Island Race Series, and is followed by the Synergy Health Management Bazan Bay 5K on March 5, the re-scheduled Sooke River 10K on March 12, Comox Valley RV Half Marathon on March 19, Port Alberni Paper Chase 10K on April 2, and Cedar 12K and Series Awards on April 9.
