After winning the District 1 championships, the U19 Sooke fastball team is on the road to the B.C. finals next month.
The team went 5-0 at the district championship, and coach Len Sudlow says he thinks they have a good shot at winning the provincial championship as well.
The B.C. tournament takes place July 13-15 in Sicamous. Seventeen teams will compete.
“It’s a tough age group, but I think if we make it to the top five we will have a good chance, because we have a great group of girls who can battle through games,” said Sudlow, adding his goal is a gold medal.
The team is focusing on batting heading into the provincial championship, because it struggled with it in district play.
“Our hitting was great all season so I’m not sure what happened, but that’s definitely what we’ll be working on,” said Sudlow.
“Luckily our defence and pitching was great at district, and we were able to come out on top.”
Sudlow is most looking forward to seeing the girls have a good time at the tournament, because some are fairly new to the sport, while others will be aging out this year.
“The best part is just seeing the love of the game,” said Sudlow.
