The Sooke Horseshoe Pitching Association hopes its second year is a ringer.
The club is aiming for a higher profile and more members as it begins the 2017 season.
And it’s off to a good start.
The association has launched several new programs this year including a drop-in for seniors (Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to noon), a junior program (Tuesdays, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.), and a an adult league (Wednesdays, 6 to 8 p.m.). In addition the club continues to host its Saturday morning free play (10 a.m. to noon) and participates in out-of-town tournaments.
“Considering we’re only in our second year, we’re doing pretty well,” said Chantal Wilson, association president.
“I’d like to see more people get involved, but I just don’t know if people are aware of it.”
A focus this year, Wilson said, will be on the junior program and more emphasis to bring schools to the horseshoe pits.
Last year, the Sooke Horseshoe Pitching Association opened six horseshoe pitches on Sooke River Road across the street from Fred Milne Park after protracted negotiations with the district.
As the association expands, it hopes to double the number of pits and add other amenities, Wilson said.
