Sooke runners shine at Victoria Marathon

Sooke made its presence known at this year’s Goodlife Fitness Victoria Marathon Sunday.

Fifty-four runners from the Sooke Region participated in the marathon, half-marathon and the 8K road race.

The majority of local runners competed in the 8K run, while 11 took on the half-marathon and eight challenged the full marathon.

The best local marathoner of the day was Danielle Mennie, who placed 93rd overall with an impressive time of 3:14.40.

Other Sooke runners in the marathon included Aisling Owton (3:26:40); Cohen Floch (3:47:23); Terry Slater (4:15:54); Tess Vally (4:35:27); Drue Julien (4:35:28); Josh Simich (4:52:13): and Sandra Fawcett (5:32:48).

Kenya’s Daniel Kipkoech won the overall marathon crown with a time of 2:22:39, while on the woman’s side Emily Setlack of Cold Lake, Alta. was the woman’s marathon winner, in a time of 2:46:20.

There were 7,989 racers registered for the events: 1,339 for the marathon; 3,266 for the half-marathon; 2,384 for the 8K; and 1,000 for the Thrifty Foods Kids Run. It was almost exactly the same registration number as last year, said spokeswoman Louise Hodgson-Jones.
