St. Mikes edge Lambrick for spot at B.C. boys basketball championships

Claremont boys fall in opener, miss out on 4A basketball provincials

The Saint Michaels University Blue Jaguars are going to the B.C. High School Boys 2A Championships after they edged the Lambrick Park Lions 64-57 in the third-place match of the 2A Island championships hosted at SMUS.

The province’s top-seeded 2A team, Brentwood College won the Island tournament defeating the Shawnigan Lake Stags 62-49 in the final. St. Mikes joins Shawnigan Lake and Brentwood in qualifying for the provincial championships at the Langley Event Centre, March 7 to 10.

St. Michaels player Ty Olynyk was named to the Island’s first all-star team, while SMUS’ Ephraim Hsu and Lambrick star Matt Collett were named second team all-stars.

Brentwood edged the Pacific Christian Pacers 91-52 in round one and then beat the Blue Jags 80-29 in the semifinal. Lambrick fell to the Stags 96-53 in the other semifinal.

The Oak Bay Bays won the boys 4A Island title in Cowichan by edging the Belmont Bulldogs 105-56 in the final. The Claremont Spartans senior boys advanced to the semifinals but were eliminated by the province’s top-seeded club, Oak Bay, 82-36.

Claremont finished sixth, Mount Douglas seventh and Spectrum eighth in the Island tourney.

Mark Isfeld (Comox Valley) won the boys 3A Islands title. The Stelly’s Stingers were the top South Island club at the Island championships finishing fifth in the standings followed by the Reynolds Roadrunners in sixth, Vic High in seventh and Royal Bay in eighth.

Ephrem Waldu of Reynolds and Mohata Ahmen of Stelly’s were named to the Island 3A second all-star team.
