Sooke has a long reputation of being a fisher’s paradise. And people like Garry Bettridge, president of the Westcoast Flyfishers Association, try to get them hooked early.

Temperatures soared above 30 C in the three cities that took part: Castlegar, Trail and Nelson with various games played in each of those locations. There were several events held from Aug. 16 to 20 that included badminton, bowling, curling, ice hockey, slo-pitch, soccer, tennis, track and field, cycling, darts and even horseshoes.

Sooke’s own Loggers men’s fastball team are the Western Canadian Senior Fastpitch champions.

Sunday, Aug. 7 started with the familiar Sooke harbour fog, but soon cleared providing a beautiful backdrop for the 2011 Sooke Subaru International Triathlon. Race day started early with events including Half Ironman, Olympic, and Sprint Distance races, as well as relays in all three events. Sooke Triathletes gave it their all, with excellent results across the field.

Dante Morandin, left, and Norris Wass-Little played for Team B.C. in the Boys U14 National Provincial Festival at UBC this past weekend. The festival featured teams from B.C., Ontario and Alberta, with B.C. defeating Ontario in overtime. Both boys were also selected and played in the Islands first Under-14 Boys Youth Elite Sevens competition held at UVic July 15 to 16.

Summer fishing report

STAAR, or Sooke Trail And Road Runners, is a local running club that started up over 10 years ago. Along with four others, former club president and secretary Jackie Eddy is one of the original members and also helped found the group.

The absentee Westshore Stingers junior B hockey team will soon have a new owner, according to Greg Batters, president of the The Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League.
