For anyone who just wants to stay in their pyjamas all day, there’s an event for you.

The Pyjama Prance in Esquimalt on Dec. 9 is a community fundraiser for the Rainbow Kitchen, which serves hot lunch to 140 a day, five days a week.

“It’s like a onesie competition,” said event coordinator Colette Scrimgeour. “We’ve had giraffes, snowmen and peacocks in it before.”

There is a 2 km and 5 km loop beginning at the Rainbow Kitchen at 500 Admirals Rd. on Sunday Dec. 9 at 9 a.m. The route runs through CFB Esquimalt and is paved with very little incline, making it a family-friendly event.

Interested participants must register online, and then pick up their race kits on Saturday Dec. 8 between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

To register, participants are asked to donate five food items, or make a minimum suggested donation of $10. On Saturday there is a silent auction, as well as door prizes from the many local sponsors.

“Last year we had about 230 people,” Scrimgeour said. “We raised over 1,000 pounds of food.”

This year the Pyjama Prance aims for 1,500 pounds of food and more than 250 participants.

The most sought-after items include (but are not limited to): ground coffee, black tea, pasta, white sugar, brown sugar, sugar alternatives, white flour, canned tomatoes, canned beans, canned fish, canned soups, granola bars, cookies, cornstarch, rice, mayonnaise, ground black pepper, powdered milk, juice crystals, vinyl gloves and napkins

Following the race there will be a pancake breakfast, and a medal ceremony for each participant. The medals are handmade out of broom by students at Esquimalt High School.

Late registrants can also sign up on the day of the race from 7:45 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. at the Rainbow Kitchen, on the side of the Esquimalt United Church.

The event also needs volunteers. For more information, to sign up as a volunteer or to register you can email pyjamaprance@gmail.com or visit facebook.com/pyjamaprance.
