The EMCS Society has a new community school program coordinator.
Sasha Gale has joined the society to work in partnership with the community school to develop new programs and continue with learning opportunities already in place.
One initiative, Makerspace, has been in operation since 2018, but Gale said one of her priorities will be to enhance that program.
“We’re getting new equipment, including new 3D printers, and we’re bringing on some new instructors as well,” she said.

The Makerspace is a program that provides a shared work space, tools, equipment and materials to the community, which when coupled with talented instructors, allows students and the community at large the opportunity to express their talents and creativity on projects of their choosing.
But while Makerspace is by all accounts a fantastic program for the community it isn’t the only community opportunity with which the society is involved.
Since 1987 the EMCS Society has worked to respond to the diverse interests of people in the region and has offered an eclectic range of programs including instruction in quilting, first aid, guitar and folk songwriting, dance and woodworking.
“We have a real mix of clientele for our programs,” Gale said.
“A lot of programs are targeted at students but we have a lot of other courses as well. There’s something for just about everyone.”
Other initiatives of the society that Gale will oversee include the popular Sooke Talks series, theatre rentals and special events.
Gale brings her own eclectic background to her new position.
A mother of two, she has worked as an executive director, yoga teacher, hairstylist, doula, and silversmith.
“I feel very lucky to be in Sooke and in this position. It’s a lovely environment with a fantastic group of helpful and capable staff members.”
