This year’s annual Shirley Spring Fair heralds the beginning of a year of significant celebrations.

“Our little community has two big anniversaries coming up,” said Vivi Curutchet, one of the event’s organizers. “Shirley Community Hall is turning 90, and we’re also celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Shirley chapter of the Federated Women’s Institute of Canada. It’s time to get together to welcome spring and prepare for a celebration year.”

The Federated Women’s Instituteof Canada has been an important part of Shirley’s local history because of its focus on rural community health and education, Curutchet noted.

“It also played an important role in establishing Remembrance Day activities on a national level,” she added.

The spring fair takes place on Sunday, April 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Shirley Community Hall at 2795 Sheringham Rd.

The event features a bounty of artists, crafters, and vendors, as well as good food and great music.

All of the funds raised go to the Shirley Community Association to support the work they do.

“Everything is run by volunteers,” Curutchet said. “We use the money to keep the hall going, to host courses, a monthly lunch for all, and to continue to support needs and activities in our community.”
