It was another great year for the Sooke Christmas Bureau.
This Christmas, the bureau prepared approximately 400 hampers and helped 350 families, which included
561 adults and 130 children.
The hampers, were handed out on Dec. 17 at the Sooke Community Hall, and varied in size and could support a single person or up to a family of five. They included a ham or turkey, stuffing, produce, pasta, crackers and other food items that make up a Christmas dinner.
More than 100 volunteers helped out over the course of eight days, and volunteer Deb Schenk said she is thankful for all the support the Sooke community has given to make the bureau possible.
“We also received the kindness of a Grade 3 class at Poirier school, holding weekly sales and raising just over $577,” said Schenk. “They are already thinking of other ways to help out next year.”
She said the Sooke Fire Rescue’s food and toy drive was also a success, and more than $10, 000 was collected.
“Hampers were plentiful and many dinners were enjoyed through the thoughtfulness of all the volunteers and the donations from the community. We can’t thank everyone enough,” said Schenk.
