Sooke is calling on residents to contribute their insights and perspectives on local watersheds, as part of an initiative to enhance the district’s climate action plan.

Heba Dakhlallah, a master’s student specializing in environment and management at Royal Roads University, is spearheading the project and seeking the community’s involvement.

“The project aims to inform the district about the most effective ways to raise awareness about watersheds, tailored specifically to the Sooke community.”

Community participation is encouraged through in-depth interviews or focus groups. These sessions will delve into participants’ knowledge of local watersheds, community initiatives, future aspirations for the watersheds, and effective communication strategies to support watershed education.

Scheduled for February and March, the interview sessions will be arranged individually, with participants having the option to choose between in-person interviews or virtual sessions.

For research purposes, the interviews will be recorded, and participants can choose to remain anonymous.

This collaborative effort aims to develop impactful and customized materials for watershed protection awareness, aligning with the goals outlined in letstalk.sooke.ca/sooke2030, according to a district release.

Interested individuals are required to register by Feb. 11 via email at dakhlallah@royalroads.ca or by calling 779-788-9330.

Dakhlallah aims to have draft materials completed in time for sharing at Sooke’s Earth Day Celebration on Saturday, April 27.
