People hoping to properly get rid of unwanted Scotch broom free of charge are in luck.

The District of Sooke is once again offering its free broom drop-off program.

As broom begins to bloom, it’s the right time to cut and remove the plant, aiding in the ongoing effort to mitigate the spread of invasive species and reduce wildfire hazards in the area.

When cutting Scotch broom, locate its base, cut close to the ground with loppers or a saw, wearing protective gear. Bundle cuttings for transport to prevent seed scattering and further spread, aiding in Scotch broom management.

Sooke residents are invited to bring their cut broom to the designated drop-off station at the District of Sooke Parks Yard, located at 2070 Kaltasin Rd. on Saturdays, from May 4 to 25, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Scotch broom, an invasive woody shrub introduced to southern Vancouver Island in the 1850s, poses ecological threats by competing with native plant species and altering soil chemistry. Its removal is important in reducing wildfire risks and preserving local biodiversity.

Apart from the drop-off service, residents are invited to participate in community broom-busting events, such as the one happening this Friday (April 26) – gather at the Broomhill playground at 9:30 a.m.
