Dan Milbrath’s ring flew off his finger while he was clearing snow from his car

It couldn’t have gotten far, but a record breaking snowfall means Dan Milbrath is still without his wedding ring.

He was clearing snow from his car Feb.11 when he felt his platinum wedding ring fly off his finger into the white stuff outside.

“I wasn’t too worried because I’d figured we’d find it,” his wife Sarah Milbrath said. “But then as the night progressed and four hours later we hadn’t found it, then I was more anxious about it.”

Dan Milbrath hooked a hose up to the hot water supply in the house, ran it out the window and eventually melted almost all of the snow in their yard looking for it. They had no luck.

Sarah Milbrath put a call out on the Oak Bay Local Facebook group looking for metal detectors, and found two volunteers – veteran metal detector Richard Linzey and his friend Ben Gorley.

The two came by Feb. 12 and quickly got to work.

The Milbrath family home is a 1930s-era structure, so the two men found plenty of old nails but no ring.

Linzey and Gorley were thorough though — Dan Milbrath said later that evening that the whole yard was dug up in the process.

“I wasn’t surprised that the community was interested in helping at all,” Sarah Milbrath said. “I’m grateful and feel closer to the community in a way. We needed help and they showed us that they are here to help us.”

The search continues.
