The Victoria Hospitals Foundation received a $1 million donation that is expected to further the foundation’s campaign to modernize and replace six pieces of imaging equipment at Royal Jubilee Hospital and Victoria General Hospital.

Alex Miller, in honour of his late wife Betty, made the donation this month as both received care at RJH and after her passing in 2021, he wanted to give back in her memory.

“Since Betty was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017, and passed away from the disease in 2021, I and other loved ones have increasingly recognized the critical importance of medical imaging in early disease detection. This gift is a continuation of Betty’s commitment to serving others. I know that it will make a difference to people’s lives and will help many for years to come,” said Miller in a news release.

Miller’s gift has pushed the foundation’s Imaging is Power campaign past a milestone of $8 million. Through the campaign, three MRIs are being modernized at both hospitals, a new CT scanner is being purchased for VGH, a new SPEC/CT scanner for RJH a new C-Arm will be installed at RJH.

Both hospitals perform more than 500 scans each day.

“The gift is not only building a strong foundation for the next decade of imaging at our Victoria hospitals, but it will also support the healthcare needs of thousands of Vancouver Islanders, well into the future. Donations like this help fuel a sense of pride and hope in our community,” said Avery Brohman, chief executive officer of the foundation.

The campaign aims to raise $11 million to upgrade and replace six pieces of imaging equipment for Greater Victoria hospitals for faster scan times, larger bed capacity and simultaneous imaging capabilities.
